Teaching Philosophy.
Professional Knowledge:
I believe proper learning can only take place when a teacher thoroughly knows their students. By knowing my students, I will be properly able to respond to their needs. Part of my pedagogical beliefs are ensuring I have knowledge on the students diverse linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds in addition to knowing about their likes/dislikes. (AITSL, 2017). This can allow me to adjust the learning when necessary, in order to maximise student engagement and structure the lessons appropriately. Miller states that lessons only begin to have purpose after teachers know their students (Miller, 2008). I aim to ensure full knowledge of the content I teach, guaranteeing that I use inquiry-based learning approaches due to the meaningful learning experiences that can take place from this.
Professional Practice:
Creating safe, inclusive and challenging learning environments are at the forefront of my pedagogical beliefs. It is imperative that the learning environment I create will be a fair environment, where every student is valued as a member of society and as a learner. Co-operative learning is an effective teaching strategy I will implement in my teaching programs and lessons, as it encourages students to work together and develop problem solving skills, critical thinking skills and communication skills. (Kelly, 2019)
Professional Engagement:
Although I am a teacher, I believe there is always room for more learning. Therefore, I believe in attending professional development days and workshops to extend on my knowledge. Active contribution to the Digital Community through Twitter allows me to learn from other teachers in the field, whilst sharing my own take on things. If new pedagogical practices come to light, I can enlighten myself on these through Twitter by gaining an understanding on different approaches to these practices. (328 words).
